The construction of the well in the City Garden of Osijek, New Town, was initiated and financed by the benefactor of Osijek, Count Pavao Pejacevic Viroviticki. The monument was donated to the Free and Royal City of Osijek on 11 July 1903. It was built according to the design of the architect Wilim Carl Hofbauer and is a masterpiece of Secessionist garden architecture in Croatia. After the Second World War it was removed from the Romantic City Garden and in the 1970s it was moved to its present location along the Upper Town promenade.
